History:

Visby Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, is a medieval cathedral in Visby, Sweden. It was built in the late 12th century and is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. The cathedral is constructed in Gotlandic style using limestone, and has a nave, choir, and two aisles of varying heights. The cathedral is preserved today as an ancient monument and is one of the best-preserved structures from the Middle Ages in Sweden. The cathedral has a long history, and was first mentioned in a papal bull issued by Pope Eugenius III in 1164. The bishop of Visby at the time, Bishop Ulf, was likely responsible for its construction, with the majority as well as most of the interior being completed over the course of the 12th century. During the medieval period, Visby was a powerful port in the Hanseatic League and the cathedral served as an important religious center. The cathedral was severely damaged in 1525-1527 during the German War of Schmalkaldic League and Swedish War of Liberation, and much of the original Gothic structure was lost. However, it was rebuilt in a modern Gothic style in the late 16th and 17th centuries, and has remained largely unchanged ever since.
