History:
The Rock of Cashel is one of the most iconic historical sites of Ireland, situated in County Tipperary in the region of Munster. The ancient site has been associated with power, kingship, and religion since the fifth century, when the King of Munster, Aenghus Mac Natfraich, built the first structure on the rock in 445 A.D. In the tenth century, the Rock of Cashel became the power center for the Kings of Munster and the seat of the High Kings of Ireland. The High Kings used the Rock of Cashel as a center for politics and religion, and the site was greatly enhanced throughout the centuries, with the addition of churches, a burial ground, defense walls, and commercial properties. The site continued to be used for political meetings and religious purposes for centuries, and in 1101 the Synod of Cashel was held there, one of the most important and influential church meetings in Irish history. During the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169-70, the site was conquered by Dermot Mac Murrough, King of Leinster, and then passed to the powerful Munster Fitzgerald family. In the late fifteenth century, the Rock of Cashel was transferred from the Fitzgeralds to the King of England, and in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries a series of defensive walls was constructed around the site, making it one of the most secure outposts in Ireland. Today the Rock of Cashel is owned by the Office of Public Works and is open to the public. The site contains numerous structures and monuments dating from the fifth century, including the Round Tower, Cormac's Chapel, the cathedral, a large graveyard, and the ancient walls. The Rock of Cashel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it continues to be an important site for visitors to Ireland. Visit one of the famous monuments of Ireland with your friends and family.
