History:

Drottningholm Palace is a baroque royal palace located on Lovön, an island in Lake Mälaren on the outskirts of Stockholm. Built in the 16th century, the palace is one of Sweden’s best-preserved royal houses and has been the permanent private residence of the Swedish royal family since 1981. The history of Drottningholm Palace dates back to the 12th century, when King Birger constructed a fortified castle on the island. King Birger, the brother of the legendary King Erik XIV, was convicted of treasonable conspiracy and died in 1250 while imprisoned at the castle. The castle was destroyed by a fire in 1517, and the castle grounds were abandoned for many years. In 1580, Queen Catherine Jagiellon finaly ordered the construction of a new palace on the ruins of the old castle, and the work was completed in 1592. The palace was a royal residence and the Queen regularly visited the palace until her death in 1625. In 1681, King Charles XI rebuilt the palace and gardens, transforming the palace into a baroque-style residence with a large area of gardens and terraces. The palace was last renovated in 1750 by King Gustaf III. Gustav III declared the palace a national cultural heritage in 1778. In 1981, Drottningholm Palace became the private residence of the current Swedish royal family. The palace, and its gardens, are open to the public for tours.
