History:

Läckö Castle is a historic castle situated on an island in Lake Vänern near Vänersborg in Sweden. The present-day castle was constructed in the 17th century but the area has served as a royal estate since the mid-13th century. The earliest mention of Läckö dates from 1298, when King Magnus IV of Sweden granted the estate to the Bishop of Skara. In the 14th century, Läckö became the private property of the Swedish monarchy and was used as a royal hunting lodge. The original castle was a timber building, replaced by the present-day stone structure in the 1640s. The new castle was built by the Swedish Field Marshal Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie at the behest of Queen Christina in order to serve as the centerpiece of the royal estate. The location and size of the building was, at the time, unprecedented for Sweden. The castle saw its heyday in the mid-17th century, when it was the home of many resident royals including Charles XI, Sarah Martha Leijonhufvud, and Count Gustaf Adolph Ribbing. During their periods in residence the castle hosted lavish festivities and parties, and a splendid collection of art and tapestries was amassed. In the mid-18th century, the castle was abandoned by the Swedish monarchy and since then has been used by a variety of private owners. In the early 20th century it was purchased by Artur von Fersen who invested heavily in the restoration of the building to its former glory. The current owner is the Swedish National Property Board, which since 1974 has overseen the upkeep and operation of the castle and its grounds.
