History:

The Roman Theatre of Verona (Teatro Romano Verona) is one of the oldest and best-preserved Roman amphitheatres still in existence. It was built in the first century BC at the behest of the Roman Emperor Augustus, and is believed to be one of the best preserved theaters of its kind in Northern Italy. With a diameter of 117 metres, the theatre is structured into three tiers of stalls, with the audience facing the stage from a seating capacity of 10,000. Around the perimeter of the theatre can be seen the ruins of the city walls as well as ancient inscriptions and sculptures. The theatre was the site of the annual Roman Games and other theatre shows, as well as executions and gladiator fights. It is also believed to have been the setting of some of the episodes of the Romeo and Juliet saga by local author, William Shakespeare. The theatre underwent several renovations in the centuries after the Roman Empire, including work commissioned by the Scaligeri dynasty in the 14th century, which added a defensive ring of walls around the theatre and expanded its stage. It was then used for military exercises for a few hundred years before falling into disuse. In the 20th century, the Italian government began to invest in its restoration, which was completed in the 1930s by the renowned Veronese architect, Antonio Bonazza. The theatre was rededicated by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and since then, has been used as a venue for large cultural and musical performances.
