History:

Santa Maria delle Grazie is an old Dominican monastery located in Milan, Italy. The construction of the monastery began in 1463, funded by Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan, and was completed by 1490. The monastery flourished for centuries, producing renowned manuscripts and books and was an important cultural center in the city. During the 16th Century, the monastery was often visited by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, who painted the famous "Last Supper" in the monastery’s refectory between 1495-1498. In 1796, the monastery was closed by Napoleon and was used as a military hospital during the Napoleonic Wars. During this time as the monastery switched between ownership, it fell into disrepair. In 1830, the monastery was returned to the Dominicans and slowly restored it to its former splendor. The Last Supper was also restored, beginning in 1941.
