Valley of the Kings, or the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings, is a valley in Egypt that was once used for burial sites for Pharaohs and their families of the New Kingdom (1539 BC - 1070 BC). Located on the west bank of the Nile, near Luxor and Thebes, the Valley of the Kings is well known for the tombs of Tutankhamun, Seti I, and Ramses II. The first tomb built in the valley was for Thutmose I, in the 15th century BCE. Initially, the tombs were decorated with wall paintings and hieroglyphs as well as secret passages leading to various chambers and treasures. However, many of the tombs had been looted in ancient times and all the burials were still visible in the 19th century. After that time, Egyptologist, like Howard Carter, began excavating and restoring the tombs to their original beauty. His work included restoring the tomb of Tutankhamun which included a huge treasure trove of gold and artifacts. Today, the Valley of the Kings is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Egypt and the majority of the tombs are open for visitation.
