History:

The Malmo City Library in Sweden dates back to the 13th Century, when the first public lending library was established in the city. In the Middle Ages, books were kept in private collections, but lending libraries began to be established in larger cities like Malmo in the 1600s. The first official library in Malmo was established in 1733. It housed collections of books from European universities ideal for scientific studies and professional training. In 1817, the library was expanded and housed in a separate building on Malmo's Kallhagen promenade. In 1871, the library moved to its current location in the City Hall. Throughout the 19th century, the Malmo Library experienced great growth and expansion. In 1878, the library had 10,094 books, and in 1883, a new wing of the library was built to house the growing collection. By the end of the century, the library had well over 100,000 volumes of books.
