History:
Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine located on the island of Itsukushima, also known as Miyajima, in the Hiroshima Prefecture of Japan. It is one of Japan's most popular tourist attractions. The shrine complex consists of multiple buildings and pagodas, several gates, and a 500 meter long walkway over the bay. The shrine is believed to have been founded in 593 AD, when EmpressSuiko commanded a priestess to consecrate a shrine on the island. Since then, the shrine has been a fixture in the spiritual lives of the Japanese people. In 1168, an Imperial edict proclaimed that Itsukushima Shrine should have the same level of reverence as the Grand Shrines of Ise. In 1555, Toyotomi Hideyoshi declared Itsukushima as a holy site and pledged his support for its development. He made it a central shrine in the "Izumo Province", and endowed it with extensive lands and taxable income. The shrine was destroyed during the bombing of Hiroshima in World War II, but it was then restored in 1950.
