The Cathedral of the Transfiguration, also known as the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra, is one of the most historic monasteries in Russia. Located in a picturesque setting at the foot of the Sergiyev mountain, the Cathedral has a history of more than 850 years, beginning with its construction in the twelfth century. The monastery was founded in 1352 by St. Sergius of Radonezh, who is the patron saint of Russia and a national hero. It achieved the status of a Lavra (monastery of the highest rank) in 1744 when it was bestowed upon it by the Russian Orthodox Church.
