History:

Visby Botanical Garden in Sweden was established in 1994, with the goal of preserving and protecting Visby’s unique plants and botanical heritage. The garden was initiated by a group of dedicated locals who wanted to create a place that would showcase the beauty of Visby's special plant diversity and unique natural surroundings. It was the vision of the creators to create an oasis in the city centre, allowing tourists to come into contact with local flora and fauna, and appreciate the beauty of Visby. The garden covers an area of two hectares, with a variety of different gardens. One of the main facilities, the alpine garden, was completed in 1999. This section of the garden is located on Visby’s highest point, ensuring visitors have the perfect opportunity to observe the plants’ natural environment. As well as the alpine garden, other areas of the Visby Botanical Garden include a rose garden, a rock garden, a wildflower meadow and a butterfly garden. The garden also offers a herb garden, heather and moss beds, an orchard and arboretum, as well as a scent garden. In 2018, the garden became the first in Sweden to gain official recognition as a scientific botanical garden from the Swedish National Board of Agriculture. The garden’s scientific team has since worked hard on planting, restoring and managing the flora and its environment.
