History:
Gotland University (Swedish: Högskolan på Gotland) is a Swedish public university located on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland in Visby. Established in 1999, it is the smallest of Sweden's thirteen state universities and specializes in the fields of game design, media, IT, and health sciences. The university traces its origins to the Gotland Institute of Education (GIE) which was first established in 1973 as the first higher education institution on Gotland Island. In 1989, GIE received its education license from the Swedish Government and became a university college in 1996. The decision to enable GIE to grant its degrees (at both the Bachelor's and Master's level) was made in 1999 and the university officially changed its name to Gotland University. The university's main organization is organized into four faculties: the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Creative Industries, the Faculty of Business Administration, and the Faculty of Jamesalund (which houses the university's research and education laboratories). Additionally, the university has many student clubs and organizations that promote student activities and the development of innovative education and research initiatives. Gotland University currently has around 3200 students and 260 faculty members. It is ranked consistently among the top universities in Sweden for its research and student satisfaction.
