History:

The Tula Kremlin is located in the Russian city of Tula, about equidistant southwest of Moscow and southeast of St. Petersburg. The Tula Kremlin is believed to have been first established in the 12th century by the Principality of Ryazan as a fortification for the defence of the area. In the 16th century, the Kremlin was expanded and improved by Grand Prince Ivan III to serve as a major military fortress. After the fall of the Ryazan principality in the 16th century, Tula was a part of the Tsardom of Moscow and the fortified city was continually developed and expanded by subsequent rulers of the Tsar. In the 18th Century the Tula Kremlin was further expanded and strengthened. In 1690, Empress Natalia Alexeevna ordered its expansion, making it one of the most impressive fortresses of the time. During the 1812 Battle of Borodino the Kremlin served as a refuge for the Russian troops who were defending against Napoleon. In the 19th century, Tula had become a major industrial center and its fortress walls went into decline as the city developed beyond it. After the October 1917 Revolution, the Kremlin fell into disrepair. In 1935 the Kremlin was restored and a museum was opened inside. Today, the Tula Kremlin is a protected site in the list of monuments of all-Russian importance and is a major tourist attraction of the city.
