History:

The State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg was established in 1895 when Emperor Nicholas II signed the decree to establish the museum. The first exhibits were placed in the Mikhailovsky Palace, which is why the museum is sometimes referred to as the Mikhailovsky Palace. The museum itself began as the Imperial Museum of Alexander III, which was established by the Alexander III of Russia in 1895. It was originally planned to include both Works of Art as well as historical artifacts. The museum was originally housed in the Mikhailovsky Palace and comprised of mainly private collections. The museum was restructured in 1919, during the Soviet period, to become the State Museum of Fine Arts. At this time, the museum began to focus more on the acquisition and display of public collections artwork. During this time, the museum had a close relationship with the Institute of Art History, which provided educational experiences within the museum. In 1981, the museum was renamed the State Russian Museum and the museum underwent extensive renovation and expansion. During this time, works from the Tsar’s collection and the Academy of Arts of the USSR were added to the collection. During the 1990’s, many pieces of Russian avant-garde artwork were added to the collection, some of which had been hidden and forgotten during socialist times.
