The Pyramid of Teti is located in the necropolis of Saqqara, Egypt, and was built during the 6th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. It is the smallest of the larger pyramids in the area and is commonly known as the “Northern Pyramid”. The pyramid was built for Pharaoh Teti, who succeeded the last ruler of the 5th Dynasty. The pyramid is 24.2 meters (79 ft) tall and has a base of 105 meters (344 feet) square. The pyramid is comprised of two parts: a descending corridor, which leads to a burial chamber, and an ascending corridor, which leads up to a burial chamber. The pyramid is poorly preserved and the chambers are incomplete. The only interior decoration that remains is some fragmentary relief panels, which depict the king with the gods. It is believed to have been designed by the royal architect, Imhotep, who also designed the world-famous pyramids at Giza. The pyramid stands at a base measuring approximately 50 meters square, withexterior steps that lead to the entrance of the Necropolis. The pyramid is believed to have had an original height of approximately 50 meters or 164 feet, although for centuries, robbers have removed parts of the pyramid in order to make use of the stones, severely reducing its current height. The entrance to the burial chamber is located approximately 12.5 meters underground and was lined with multiple doors, likely made of granite, in order to protect the remains of the Pharaoh from intruders. It is believed that there may have once been a substructure underneath the burial chamber, however, no definitive evidence of such a chamber exists. Teti's pyramid, as well as the other pyramids in the vicinity of Saqqara, have undergone restoration work, both by ancient Egyptians and more recently by modern archaeologists.
