It is a part of the UNESCO-listed World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site, the Golden Ring of Russia. The estate dates back to at least the 16th century, although its first mention in the written sources dates to the 17th century. The estate belonged to the Odoyevsky and Volkonsky noble families. Its main attractions are the Church of the Transfiguration (1794) and the Big House (1901–1904). The estate was the birthplace and childhood home of famous Russian writer and nobleman, Count Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1828–1910). The grounds of the estate are open for public visits.
