Overview:

The Pyramid of Merenre I is one of the oldest surviving pyramids from the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. It was built around 2400 BC and is the second-oldest of the three pyramids at the necropolis of Saqqara, just south of Cairo. Merenre was the first pharaoh of Egypt’s 6th Dynasty and this pyramid was built for his burial. It is quite small, standing only around 33 meters tall and with a base area of only 52 square meters. It was extensively looted in ancient times, but in the late 19th century, Merenre’s pyramid was finally excavated by English archaeologist Sir William Flinders Petrie. At the time of excavation, the burial chamber still contained a sarcophagus and various funerary objects, including canopic jars and a small statue of Merenre. History:

The Pyramid of Merenre I (also known as the Pyramid of Merenre Nemtyemsaf I) was an ancient Egyptian pyramid built during the Sixth Dynasty, about 2300 BC. The pyramid was the first in the series of pyramids re constructed by the Pharaohs of the 12th Dynasty and the last building which was built by this dynasty. The pyramid is located at Abusir, which is situated within the modern day Cairo. It is the largest of the pyramids built during this period and also has the most distintive architecture of the time. The Pyramid of Merenre I is made out of mud bricks and built in three steps, with a large basalt stone cap at the top. It reached an original height of 49m and was surrounded by walls built out of the same kind of mud bricks with a length of 1783 meters and a width of 1118 meters. It had only one entrance which was on the east side. Originally the pyramid contained five burial chambers, each accessed by descending corridors, however, due to the pyramid's age, much of the interior has been lost, leaving little information about its original design and function. This includes any inscriptions that might have been present and the exact location of the burial chambers. Although the extent of the damage to the pyramid is unknown, it is believed that it could have been damaged due to an earthquake in the area. This could explain why most of the pyramid's interior is missing.
