History:

Grigory Lermontov's monument in Pyatigorsk was erected in 1865 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the famous poet Mikhail Lermontov. It was created by the prominent Russian sculptor Mihail Anikushin. The monument was initially placed in the centre of Pyatigorsk and featured a bronze statue of the poet on a marble pedestal. In 1933, the monument was relocated to the city park and surrounded by greenery. However, during World War II the monument was heavily damaged by the German troops and almost destroyed. The bronze statue lost its head and arm. After the war, the monument was repaired and completely restored. The statue of Lermontov was covered with a new bronze frame and new pedestal was designed. In 1949, the monument was finally unveiled for the 200th anniversary of Lermontov's birth. It has since become a popular tourist destination in Pyatigorsk and a popular site to visit for the locals.
