History:

The Ba Na Hills have been a part of Vietnam's history for centuries. Located in central Vietnam, the area was home to several small ethnic minorities. Inhabitants lived in the area as early as the 15th century and built several complex networks of tunnels. It wasn't until 1892, however, when French explorer Henri Mouhot first visited the area and described the beauty of the mountain range. The French colonial government quickly recognized the potential of the area and, with help from investors, began developing the mountaintop. To speed progress, a cable car was built between the town of Da Nang and the mountain range of Ba Na Hills in 1919. When it was finished, the cable car was hailed as the longest of its kind in the entire world. By 1922, the Ba Na Hills area quickly evolved into a popular tourist attraction. Visitors flocked to the region to stay in resorts and partake in activities such as trekking, bird watching, and visiting Buddhist temples. The Vietnamese War further developed the area, and the Ba Na Hills became a strategic defensive base for the Viet Cong. After the war, however, the hills were once again a hotspot for tourists. New resorts, restaurants, and leisure activities were all built in the region to capitalize on the scenic views and untouched nature.
