It is said to have been built in 1913 by the Nguyen dynasty during the reign of Emperor Khai Dinh. The temple has a unique structure. It is made up of three connected buildings. The first building contains eight contemporary altars, which are dedicated to dignitaries who have ruled the area in the past. The second building has a giant statue of Mieu Ba Chua Xu which is the focal point of the temple. Mieu Ba Chua Xu is a form of ancestor worship practiced in Vietnam's An Giang Province. The worship ceremony is led by a family priest and involves offerings of fruit, flowers, and incense to the goddess of the sea, Chua Xu. The ceremony is typically held annually on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, just before the start of the rice planting season. Other offerings are also made to the ancestors, with a final thank you given to the gods. There may also be a group performance of traditional music and folk dance. During the ceremony, the family priest will offer prayers for good weather, luck, abundance, harmony, and prosperity. How to reach:
The best way to reach Mieu Ba Chua Xu in An Giang, Vietnam is by car. You can either book a driver from Ho Chi Minh City or rent a car and drive yourself. From Ho Chi Minh City, take the National Highway 1A to Tra Vinh and then head west onto the Gia Rai-Chau Doc-Long Xuyen Expressway. Follow the expressway to Long Xuyen, then take the provincial road 381 to Chau Doc. You can then follow Provincial Road 902 east until you reach Mieu Ba Chua Xu.
