History:

Dong Hoi Citadel, located in Quang Binh Province of Vietnam, is believed to have originated in the early 15th century as a fortress that protected the local people from invading forces. The citadel sits atop a small mountain and is part of the larger Trang An strategic defensive complex. The official history of the citadel dates back to 1448, when it is first mentioned in records of the Tran Dynasty. The citadel was built to defend against invasions from the north at the time. It was also the home of many religious sites, including nearby Phong Nha Cave and Trang An Temple. During the 17th century, the citadel was invaded by the Chinese and had to be defended by a small force of local Vietnamese. In 1754, the Le Dynasty was successful in gaining control of the citadel, until it passed into French colonial control in 1888. The citadel was subsequently restored and strengthened with additional fortifications. In 1945, during the end of World War II, Dong Hoi Citadel was invaded by the Japanese along with the entire region. However, shortly after, the citadel was recaptured by French forces as part of the overall French conquest of Vietnam. Today, visitors to Dong Hoi Citadel can still appreciate its historical significance, with the citadel still possessing walls and a watchtower that are an integral part of the fortress' original design. An ancient grave and temple complex are also located on the grounds. Visitors are also provided with a wonderful view of the colorful landscape of the province, including the majestic mountains and lush forests of Trang An.
