History:

Thien Mu Pagoda is a beloved landmark in Thua Thien-Hue province, located along the banks of the Perfume River. Built in 1601, it is the oldest and most impressive pagoda in all of Vietnam. The pagoda was built by Nguyen Hoang, the Lord of Central Vietnam, to honor his mother's request that he build a temple that could protect his land from both natural disaster and foreign invasion. The first structure built was a seven-story high tower and its design was based on the Chinese Octagonal Tower in China. In 1641, a secondary stupa was added to the main building, with its foundation being a large banyan tree. This stupa was also called Phuoc Duyen Tu, which means Stupa of Awareness. Further buildings and structures have been added throughout the centuries, including a large 18th Century bell tower. The pagoda is known for its relics that date back to different periods and for its beautiful architecture. During the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese commandeered it for use as a transmission base.
