History:
The Long Bien Bridge in Hanoi, Vietnam was built between 1899 and 1902. Initially designed by French architect Daydé & Pille, the bridge was intended to bridge the Red and the Clear Rivers in order to facilitate access to the Long Bien Market. Primarily constructed of steel, the bridge was improved upon and modified between 1904 and 1910 with the addition of new arches. Long Bien Bridge was considered to be a symbol of French colonization in Vietnam during this period. During World War II, the bridge was damaged by Japanese bombings but was then repaired. During the Vietnam War, the Long Bien Bridge was the main transport link between North and South Vietnam, and was heavily targeted and damaged by US bombing. In the post-war era, conditions at the bridge steadily deteriorated due to lack of funding for repairs. In 2010, the government of Vietnam started a major project to renovate and preserve the bridge, and by 2013 the restoration of the bridge was complete.
