History:

Ban Gioc Waterfall is the largest cross-border waterfall in Asia located on the Quay Son River, which forms part of the border between Vietnam and China. The 320-meter-wide waterfall consists of three streams that plunge down 30 meters. The waterfall creates a spectacular view of water with a blue, green, and white triple waterfall. The falls have been known to the countries of Vietnam and China for a long time and have featured in numerous ancient tales. It is mentioned in a Chinese text from 519 AD which outlines how boats had to navigate around a large natural barrier that formed part of the border between the two countries. It was also referenced in the Duyet ThiDu, a poem written in 1833 by the famous Vietnamese poet Nguyen Du. The official rediscovery of the Ban Gioc Waterfall is attributed to the French geographer E Grande de Vergennes, who explored the region in the late 19th century. He was so impressed by the spectacular waterfall that he suggested to the French colonial government to commission a road to the falls so that tourists could view them. The falls remained a popular spot among locals until the mid-20th century when the area became a major tourist spot. It even featured in a Vietnamese movie in 1967 entitled “Ransack the Ban Gioc Waterfall.” The Vietnamese government set up tourist accommodation around the falls and improved accessibility by constructing a suspension bridge over the River.
