History:

San Francisco Church, widely known as San Francisco de Asís Church, is a prominent religious center located in Caracas, Venezuela. It is the oldest chapel still standing in Caracas and the largest basilica of its kind in Latin America. The church was constructed in 1590 by the Franciscan order of monks led by Fray Dionisio de Herrera, who later became the bishop of Venezuela. It is the second original church in Caracas, after The Cathedral of Caracas, which was built in 1566. The original building was severely damaged in a major earthquake in 1641, leaving only the three walls standing. This led to the beginning of the reconstruction, led by the sub-deacon Francisco de Guzmán between 1694 and 1705. During these years, a classical style was implemented, with a large central dome and two narrow lateral domes, accompanied by bell towers. In 1988, the Franciscan Brothers gave the San Francisco Church to the Venezuelan government to be preserved and restored as part of the country’s cultural patrimony. Between 1988 and 2002, the whole church was remodelled and most of the original structures were renovated. Since 2002 the church is now open to the public for visits and services in both English and Spanish. San Francisco Church is now a National Historical Monument and it is considered as one of the most iconic monuments in Caracas.
