History:

The history of El Hatillo dates back to 1784, when the property was granted to the Bishop of Caracas (Don Diego Rodríguez Guevara) as a retirement home. He gave it to the order of the Saint Augustinian Recollects Friars, led by Fray Domingo Hidalgo. At the time, it was known as the Hacienda or Farm of El Hatillo. In 1802, the Recollects Friars built a monastery, a chapel and an orchard. The area was known for its colorful gardens, orchards and vineyards, and it was a popular spot for picnics and social gatherings. El Hatillo was also home to several churches and convents, as well as some of the earliest schools in the area. In 1810, the property was sold to José Vicente de Bolívar, brother of Simón Bolívar. He renamed the area “San Francisco El Grande” and expanded the property with additional land. The area continued to grow and developed into a townsite with an increasing population. In 1831, the Venezuelan President Antonio Guzmán Blanco (known as “The Great Administrator”) declared El Hatillo as an independent municipality, separating it from the District of Chacao and giving it a shield and a coat of arms. In 1843, the first Mayor of El Hatillo was elected. During that period, the population had grown to 4,000, with many of the residents being immigrants from Spain, Portugal and France.
