History:
El Cedral is the oldest existing town on Margarita Island in Nueva Esparta State, Venezuela. It was founded in 1594 by a group of Spanish pioneers, led by Governor Antonio Berroterán, from Coro. The town was originally used to cultivate fruits and vegetables for supply ships voyaging to the Caribbean and northern South American ports. The town was initially called Santa Rosa de La Guayara, after the nearby Guayara River, which was the name of the region within Margarita Island. Later, in 1784, it was renamed El Cedral, after the parish church built that year. The church is still standing today, and is one of the best examples of colonial architecture in all of Venezuela. El Cedral quickly grew in the 17th and 18th centuries, as other settlers arrived and the region began to prosper economically. The town became the main urban center of the Island and was home to many important political, economic and religious leaders. It remained the principal commercial hub until the 19th century, when the port of La Asunción began to overshadow it in importance. Today, El Cedral is still an important destination for tourists visiting Margarita Island. It has a number of colonial-era buildings that are now protected as national monuments. The town is also the site of the annual Festival del Cristo, which includes a procession of the local church’s statute of the Christ of El Cedral.
