History:

The area of Mount Roraima (Gran Sabana in Spanish) is located in Bolívar State in Venezuela and began forming during the Precambrian Period, about 2 billion years ago. It was shaped by a period of intense erosion and is one of the oldest flat top mountains in the world. The mountain itself is believed to be over 60 million years old. The original inhabitants of the region were the native Yanomami people who have traditionally believed it to be the dwelling place of the god Maú, the father of all spirits. Evidence of this belief has been found in archaeological finds of pottery fragments with spiritual symbols. The first Europeans to visit the region were in the 15th century. They brought with them tools and weapons that were used to hunt and explore the region. One of the earliest documents detailing the encounter was written by Friar Diego de Ordaz in the year 1526. In the 17th century, for more than four centuries, the region was virtually untouched with only sporadic contact from explorers, missionaries and colonists. In the 1870s, Mount Roraima was rediscovered by gold miners, but no mining took place. The area was also explored by the American botanist and geologist, Charles Brewer-Carías. He has authored several books on the region and its inhabitants and is credited with naming it Gran Sabana. In the early 20th century, the area was further explored and documented by scientists and adventurers such as the British botanist and explorer, Percy Blakeney-Smith. His expedition in 1927 was the first modern scientific expedition to Mount Roraima and he discovered many unusual plants and animal species. In the 1980s, the Venezuelan government made Mount Roraima a protected area and established a national park in 1993. Since then, the area has become increasingly popular with hikers and adventure tourists from all over the world. While more remains to be discovered, evolution and exploration of Mount Roraima has taken place over centuries and continues today.
