History:

El Junquito is a small neighborhood located in the western part of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. Although it has a long history, it is most noted for its involvement in the political struggles of the early 21st century. The first recorded settlement in El Junquito happened in 1690, when a group of Spanish colonizers used the area to found a town named San Jose de Tolón. However, El Junquito only became a significant part of Caracas in the 17th century, when it was used to supply water and firewood to the city. In the 19th century, the area began becoming more urban. It had a network of cobblestone streets, small homes and a few churches. The population of El Junquito also began growing, with many settlers, immigrants and refugees coming to the area. In the early 21st century, El Junquito experienced rapid change. When former President Hugo Chávez was elected in 1999, the neighborhood became the site of protests and demonstrations against his government, mostly lead by university students.
