: La Restinga Lagoon is a Ramsar recognized, brackish, coastal lagoon located on Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta State, in Venezuela. It is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. It covers an area of 8,000 hectares (80.6 km2) and contains five small islands (Cayo Meanguera, Cayo Obispo, Cayo Muerto, Isla El Gran Roque and Isla La Restinga) and more than 10 aquatic plants. History:

The La Restinga Lagoon, located on Margarita Island, off the coast of Nueva Esparta State in Venezuela, was formed some 10,000 years ago, when the sea level rose and flooded the area. Since then, La Restinga Lagoon has served as an important source of food and shelter for wildlife. The lagoon has many endemic species of fish and freshwater birds. The spotted eagle ray, which is classified as near threatened, is among the most important species found in the area. Other species such as the siren and sea otter also rely on the lagoon for their survival. Humans have settled around the lagoon since ancient times. Indigenous tribes living in the area first exploited the lagoon as a source of food, utilizing ancient fishing and hunting techniques. The area also became an important commercial fishing place as the arrival of settlers to Margarita Island increased. However, the pollution caused by industrial activity, as well as agricultural runoff, has damaged the lagoon's flora and fauna over time.
