History:

The history of Autana tepuy, located within the ancestral lands of the Piaroa and Yaruro ethnic groups in the Amazonas state of Venezuela, dates back to the 1500s. During this time, Spanish conquistadors and missionaries explored the region, coming to know the peak of this mountain and giving it its name after the ancient indigenous deity found in the area. In the following centuries, Autana tepuy became an important pilgrimage site of local indigenous people, in search of spiritual practices and rituals. However, only in 1949 was Autana tepuy declared a protected natural monument. From then on, scientists and explorers started to visit the region, placing Autana tepuy on the map. In 1961, the first climbers to ever reach the summit of Autana tepuy completed their ascent, while two years later, a speleologist identified the caves at the bottom of the mountain. In 1977, the Autana tepuy Natural Monument was further declared an Important National Park. By then, Autana tepuy had become known worldwide for its impressive landscapes, unique biodiversity, and mysterious caves, receiving various foreign expeditions and research teams. Later on, Autana tepuy featured in multiple films and documentaries, such as "The Lost World" (1992) and "Encounters with a Giant" (2007). Its highest peak was even given the name of "Beauty of God" as well as being named one of the seven wonders of Venezuela. Given its importance, in 2015, the "Autana Tepuy Heritage Corridor" was declared, preserving its bio-cultural and landscape diversity. In 2019, the Autana tepuy even received “Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems” recognition by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
