History:

Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) was founded on July 26, 1721, when the viceregal government of the Spanish Empire created the Real Colegio Seminario de Caracas (Royal Seminary College of Caracas). This college was established as an institution dedicated to postgraduate religious and academic education, for the training of young men in the arts, philosophy, theology, and law. This college was the first university founded in Venezuela and is the highest institution of education in the country. In 1725, José Francisco de Macarix, a Catholic priest, was appointed as the first rector of the Real Colegio. In 1735, the Audiencia de la Plata Real, a royal court, granted the college a Royal Charter that placed it under the protection of the Spanish Crown. Thus, the college was officially recognized as a university. In the 19th century, the university underwent a period of modernization, with the addition of new courses and curricula. In 1810, the new rector, Andrés Bello, established the Department of Law and Political Science, the first of its kind in all of Latin America. He also restructured the whole university system into three faculties: Law and Humanities, Medicine, and Mathematics. In 1819, the Real Colegio changed its name to Universidad de Caracas. The university has been home to some of Venezuela's most prominent social and political figures throughout history and has produced some of the country's most recognized scholars, politicians, and statesmen.
