History:
Juan Antonio Pérez Bonalde (1770–1829) was a Venezuelan poet, dramatist, and journalist. He was born in the city of Miranda, in the state of Miranda, Venezuela. Miranda is a region located in the central plains of Venezuela. The city of Miranda has a strongly European presence due to the large number of immigrants who settled there during the 19th century. During this period, immigration to Miranda from the Canary Islands, as well as Italy, France, and Spain was common. Prior to the 19th century, the region of Miranda was mainly inhabited by the indigenous people of the region. These native tribes were grouped into two major families, the Carib and the Arawak. During the 16th and 17th centuries, colonial Spain arrived in Venezuela. The Spanish established a settlement in Miranda known as San Cristóbal de Caracas, which later became the modern-day city of Caracas. In 1720, Miranda and its neighboring regions declared independence, forming the Forefront Province. The Miranda-formed alliance battled with colonial Spain for several years, eventually gaining independence in 1810. This paved the way for the formation of Venezuela. During the Venezuelan War of Independence, several battles took place between the Spanish and the Venezuelans in Miranda. This was especially true during the year of 1812, when Spanish forces led by General Ríos attempted to regain control of San Cristóbal de Caracas. Juan Antonio Pérez Bonalde joined the revolutionaries during this battle, writing several patriotic poems to encourage his fellow revolutionaries in their fight for independence. In 1811, he wrote the verses of the national anthem of Venezuela, “Gloria al bravo pueblo” (“Glory to the Brave People”). Today, the state of Miranda is one of the most populous states in Venezuela. It is a culturally-rich place, with influences from the Spanish and Native American cultures. Juan Antonio Pérez Bonalde is honored with a monument in Miranda's capital city, Los Teques. This monument was erected in 1999 to commemorate the bicentennial of his birth. You must visit one of these historical places in Venezuela on your Venezuela tour
