His mother, Serafina de Páez, came from a wealthy family and his father, José Manuel Páez, was an Andalusian trader. José Antonio Páez was an early participant in the Venezuelan War of Independence. He joined Simón Bolívar's forces in 1813 and eventually rose to the rank of general. Páez distinguished himself in battles such as El Juncal, Acarigua and Las Queseras del Medio. His bravery on the battlefield and his loyalty to Simón Bolívar earned him the nickname, "The Centaur of the Plains". After Independence, Páez was appointed the first President of Venezuela in 1830. He remained in power for 18 years and promulgated many laws that improved the education of his countrymen and developed Venezuela's economy. In 1858, a civil war erupted between Venezuela and Colombia. Páez sided with the Venezuelan government and his forces eventually emerged victorious. In 1864, the state of Portuguesa was created. Páez recognized the importance of this occasion and donated his birthplace to the state to be used as a museum. Today, the José Antonio Páez Museum, located in the city of Turén, preserves the history and legacy of the great liberator.
