The Cuare Wildlife Refuge is located in the Sucre state of Venezuela, South America. It was declared a wildlife refuge on October 3, 1990, by Presidential Decree N° 4,808, in order to protect the natural environment of the state of Sucre, including the diversity of species native to the region. The Cuare Wildlife Refuge is located in a lush tropical forest landscape and covers an area of 672.37 square kilometers in the Guarataro River basin. The primary purpose of the Cuare Wildlife Refuge is to protect the biological diversity of the region and to promote the use of renewable natural resources in a sustainable manner. The refuge is managed by the National Institute of Forestry and Ecological Reserves (INAFE). The refuge provides protection for several species of fauna and flora that are threatened with extinction, such as the large cats (jaguar, ocelot, margay, and puma) and mammals (manatee, tapir, peccary), reptiles (anacondas), amphibians, birds, fish, and invertebrates. The refuge also works to reduce human impact on the environment by increasing the use of renewable natural resources in a sustainable manner.
