History:

The city of Villa de Cura was founded on August 16, 1620 as a task in charge of Captain Francisco Beltrán Velutino de Machado, in addition to a group of Franciscan missionaries, who came with the task of pacifying the area and evangelizing its people. This city was formerly known as Hatopamba, which in the language of the Carapamema Nation means “river mountain”; while its current name was given in honor of Don Cura José de Leon and Villa, who diligently dedicated himself to evangelizing the residents of the region. In colonial times, Villa de Cura was the main local administrative center of the province of Turkey, which belonged to the jurisdiction of the Captaincy General of Caracas.
