History:
The Parque del Este (translated as the “East Park”) is located in the Caracas Capital District in the municipality of El Hatillo, Venezuela. It was opened on April 7, 1961, and was the first large public space in the city. Located on the eastern side of the Caracas metro area, the park covers an area of 144 hectares. The development of the Parque del Este was first proposed in the 1940’s by the National Institute of Parks. They proposed the idea of creating a large urban wilderness area in the Caracas Valley that could be used for recreation. Construction of the park began in 1959 and took two years to complete. The main part of the Parque del Este consists of a large lake and 10 gardens surrounding it. Each garden features a variety of floral and fauna, including trees, shrubs, and flowers that can tolerate the tropical climate. Throughout the park are numerous pathways and a few trails for hiking. Picnic and camping facilities are also available. The main purpose of the park is to balance the development of the Caracas valley with the need for recreational spaces for residents and visitors. In addition to its recreational offerings, the Parque del Este is also home to a number of museums, such as the Jardin Botanico, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, and the Casa Miraflores. Today, the Parque del Este is a popular destination for nature lovers, tourists, and locals alike. It is also the site for many international music and theatre festivals, including the Tango Festival and the Caracas Motown Festival.
