The oldest records of the church date back to the start of the 12th century, when the first parish church of the Wilhelmsvorstadt district was built as a Gothic chapel. This was destroyed by fire in the 14th century and a new church built on the same site in 1525, which was replaced by a Baroque style structure in the 19th century. During World War II, the church was heavily damaged but was later restored. In the late 19th century, the church was renovated by architect Franz Schwechten into a more modern Neo-Gothic style. This renovation was hailed as one of the most exceptional works of architecture in Munich at the time. It was at this point that the original bells of the church were replaced with the traditional bells of St. Peter's. Over the years, the church has been used for a variety of different services and celebrations.
