Brief History:

The Great Mosque of Diyarbakır is a historic Islamic holy site in the ancient Silk Road city of Diyarbakır in eastern Turkey. Construction of the mosque began in 1091 under the rule of the Sultans of the Great Seljuk Empire. The mosque is built from local basalt, has two minarets, and is decorated with the most intricate carvings of any mosque in Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) that still survives. The Great Mosque is home to a large number of extra-curricular activities including music and storytelling. Islamic festivals as well as commercial and non-commercial activities take place here. It remains a focal point of the Diyarbakır community, and a symbol of the strong Islamic influence in the city. It is one of the most famous mosque in Turkey which you must visit.

Architecture:

The architectural style of the Great Mosque of Diyarbakır in Turkey is Turkish-Islamic. The mosque is characterized by its majestic entrance, dungeon-like gate and high walls. The mosque has a two-storey main prayer hall, adorned with arabesque inscriptions, with a total of 14 domes. The minarets are built with brick and stone and rise from a thick body of stone and plaster. Inside, there are marble columns, with stucco decoration. The domes are painted in ochre, and are supported by elegant squinches that form smaller domes. The mosque also features a library, sermon room and ablution area. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
