Bursa Grand Mosque In Turkey: Brief History,Architecture,Visiting Hours, & Travel Information

Architecture:

The Bursa Grand Mosque is a large and impressive structure located in the city of Bursa, in northwest Turkey. It is one of the oldest mosques in Turkey and was built in the early 14th century during the Ottoman Empire. The mosque was designed by architect Ali Neccar in 1399 CE, and it is recognisable for its brightly decorated exterior. The mosque is constructed on a raised platform to make it more visible and grander than the surrounding buildings. There is a wide courtyard outside the complex, and a wide portico that leads to five doors. On the Eastern side of the portico is a large marble fountain which is used for ritual ablutions before prayers. The mosque has a square plan with four large iwans (arched porticoes) which lead to the main prayer hall. The prayer hall itself is of a rectangular shape and is covered by a large dome, 22 metres in diameter and 32 metres high. The dome is supported on four massive pillars and topped with a crescent finial. An ornate fountain is located in the centre of the prayer hall and the walls of the room are lavishly decorated with glazed tilework. The mosque has two minarets, plus minarets at each corner. The minarets are topped with conical roofs made from lead and decorated with quartz. There is an arcade that runs around the perimeter of the mosque and there are galleries above the entrance portals. The courtyards of the mosque are surrounded by the upper galleries and a raised portico roof that has multiple domes. The outer exterior of the mosque is decorated with glazed tiles in geometric designs. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
