Round Tower, Copenhagen, also known as Rundetårn, is a 17th-century baroque tower in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was designed as an astronomical observatory with an internal spiral ramp to reach the top. It is the oldest functioning astronomical observatory in Europe and the oldest functioning building in Copenhagen. It stands as an iconic symbol of the city's skyline and is one of the top three historic sights in Denmark. The founder of the Round Tower, Christian IV, began work in 1637 and officially opened the tower in 1642. The ramp of the tower was the first part to be completed, and a master builder designed the ramp to lead to the balcony which was used as an astronomical observatory. Christian IV built several other astronomical towers throughout Denmark, but the Round Tower is the only one surviving to this day.
