The Old Town, or Den Gamle By, is a museum located in Aarhus, Denmark. It opened in 1914 and is one of the oldest open-air museums in the world. The Old Town was initiated by a local historian Dr. Anker Hviid, who proposed the idea to the Aarhus City Council in 1891. His initial idea was to create a living museum that would preserve the city’s cultural and historical heritage. He was soon joined by antiquarian F.J.E. Langes and merchant-artist Philip Møller, who both shared Hviid’s vision. In 1909, the City Council decided to approve the project and allocated money for it. In the following five years, the town was reconstructed and buildings from different periods in the city’s history were added. The Old Town was officially opened on 2 October 1914 by Danish Prime Minister Carl Theodor Zahle. Initially, the area only included the period prior to 1864, but in the following years, more and more buildings from later periods were reconstructed.
