Its construction began in 1598, when King D. Felipe II ordered the construction of the church and its bell tower. The church was designed by master builder Domingos Fernandez, who followed the plans of the architect Francisco de Holanda. It was completed in 1679 and consecrated in 1686. It is notable for its intricate stone and wood carving, which includes a 17th century Baroque altar. The church is a traditional gathering place, hosting a weekly twilight market of handmade crafts and occasional concerts. The church was restored in the 1930s, but was subsequently damaged by fire and earthquake. In 2007, extensive restoration work was undertaken to repair the church, which was restored to its original state.
