History:
Alcobaça Monastery has served as a repository of Portugal’s royal and religious history since its construction in the 12th century. It was built on the orders of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, to the designs of Master Hugot, and later reconstructed in the 16th century with many of the features of the Monastery reflecting the Gothic style of its time. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

Alcobaça Monastery is the largest Cistercian Gothic building in Europe, and its monumental size isn’t its only impressive feature. The beautifully decorated church, such as its rose window, richly decorated chapels and cloisters, and its 14th-century choir stalls are some of its highlights.

Guided tours of the complex are available to visitors, and a variety of events, workshops, and performances take place in the monastery throughout the year.
