History:
The church was originally built soon after Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, was baptized in Braga in 1147. Construction of the church was probably completed by 1221. Its most recognizable feature is a 16th century Manueline-style façade, which added a Renaissance aesthetic to the original Romanesque architectural style. Igreja de São Tiago is home to the relics of St. James, a gift from Pope Clement IV in the 13th century. The relics are kept in a reliquary behind the altar, and can be seen in the chapel of St. James.
