Chapel of Saint Martin In Portugal: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The original chapel is believed to have been built between 1025 and 1030, and was dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, who was a renowned Christian leader and soldier from the 4th Century. The chapel was built to honor Saint Martin’s influence over the region of France. During the Hundred Years War, the chapel was fortified and used as a place of refuge for Caen’s citizens. The chapel survived until the Second World War, when it was destroyed in the Allied bombing of Caen in 1944. The current chapel measures 16 meters in length and 10 meters in width. The soft limestone walls are decorated with sculptures, which depict Saint Martin and various religious figures.
