Basílica dos Congregados is a 17th-century Baroque basilica located in Porto, Portugal. It was built and designed by famous Portuguese Baroque architect Nicolau Nasoni and was finished in 1772. The basilica is part of the Congregates of Jesus and Mary, a religious order established by Archbishop of Braga, Diogo de Sousa and his assistant, Father Manuel dos Santos in 1687. It is one of the best churches in Portugal which you must visit.

History:

The foundation of the basilica began in 1544, when Padre Manuel dos Santos convinced Archbishop Diogo de Souza to build a place dedicated to religious services. Work on the foundation began in 1544, but was halted due to wars and other political problems of the time. This was until 1687, when Padre Manuel dos Santos and Archbishop Diogo de Souza restarted their project and took down the original church to build a larger and more grandiose church. The construction of the basilica ended in 1772 and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who is also the patron saint of Porto. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

The basilica stands at 79 metres (259 ft) tall and was the tallest structure in Porto until 1895. The façade of the church features two large bell towers that stand at over 70 metres (230 ft) tall. Also featured on the façade is a bronze statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception which was sculpted by Cipriano da Cruz e Silva in 1772. The interior of the basilica features richly decorated ceilings and walls with an altar crafted from marble and a large organ with over 500 pipes.
