Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a 16th-century monastery located in the civil parish of Belém in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. It was a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is one of the most important architectural works of the late Portuguese Renaissance and Mannerism. The Mosteiro was commissioned in 1501 by King Manuel I to commemorate Vasco da Gama's return voyage to India, and was constructed in the style of the Late Gothic Manueline architecture. The church features a large nave flanked by two aisles, with a Baroque style choir at the chancel. The transept is decorated with various symbols of the Order of Christ, and includes a series of terraces and a cloister. The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos houses the Tomb of Vasco da Gama, as well as tombs for several former kings, queens and princes of Portugal. The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is one of Portugal's most visited national monuments, with approximately 2 million visitors each year. It offers guided tours, provides audio-guides and interactive exhibition rooms, and hosts art exhibitions and a variety of cultural activities. It is also home to the National Archaeology and Maritime Museums, both of which offer numerous artifacts and exhibits related to Portuguese history and culture.
