History:
Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo was built in the 13th century by a monk named João Gil, who was a descendant of a noble family from the kingdom of Castile. The church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was completed in 1293. The original structure was much simpler and smaller than the present one. Over time, the building was enlarged, some of its Gothic and Renaissance elements were added, and Baroque works were added in the 18th century. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.

The sacristy is full of paintings, silverware, and artifacts from the 13th and 14th centuries. The bell tower reaches 68.6 meters and is the highest in the region. It contains six bells, each with its own sound and name.
