Igreja de Santa Maria was originally built in 1485 on orders from King Dom Manuel I. The construction of the church took over fifty years and was completed in 1529. It was then re-built in the 17th century, giving it its unique Baroque-style appearance. Throughout its history, the church has served as a venue for religious ceremonies, conventions, and services. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Portugal.
